The Hills Have Eyes Promotional Package (Horror/Thirller)

I have chosen to annalise The Hills Have Eyes promotional package as the genre of this sequel is Horror and Thrill. The genre of our teaser trailer is Horror and Thrill and i think annotating The Hills Have Eyes film poster, The Hills Have Eyes Two film poster and The Hills Have Eyes trailer will defiantly improve our ideas. The reason why I'm not annotating a The Hills Have Eyes film magazine front cover is because one was never made so there isn't one to annalise.

The Hills Have Eyes Two Film Poster

This is the film poster for The Hills Have Eyes Two. Comparing this film poster to other film poster that you have seen previously you can see that it is very simple, with no billing block, actor or actress's titles, and the tag line hasn't even been printed on this one. One of the reasons why this film poster has been designed this way is because it is continuing on from another film, so the poster has been simplified because anyone who has watched the previous film will know what it is about. Also having it simplified creates a lot of mystery to the film and makes the viewer question whether the film will the similar to the first The Hills Have Eyes. The colours that have been used in this film poster are very dull but warm colours. Having this contrast helps the main image stand out more, as the warm oak colour is more in the center of the image where the two figures are. This straight away draws the viewers eyes to the two figures and as this is really the only thing on the poster that represents the film it has a good impact on the viewer. The main image of someone being dragged across a desert does actually relate to the previous The Hills Have Eyes film as the film is based in some desert in America. I think this main image defiantly makes the poster a lot different to any other film poster as it doesn't actually show any one's faces. Also the target audience for the previous film was for people who enjoyed watching violent horrors and having an image where someone I'm dragging someone else defiantly would appeal to their target audience. This builds up the tension and suspense for the viewer as they don't know who's in the film, also not having the titles of any actors or actress's also adds to this effect. Overall i think The Hills Have Eyes Two defiantly reaches its target audiences using the colour contrast and the main image. Having a simplified design for the film poster makes it very different from other posters and stand out more.

The Hills Have Eyes 2 Film Poster
This is The Hills Have Eyes film poster. As you can tell this film poster is a lot different to The Hills Have Eyes Two poster. Even though there still isn't a Billing Board or any actors or actress's titles the layout, main image and the colour scheme is quite different. Firstly the Tag Line that has been used is 'The lucky ones die first' implies that this film is defiantly is a Horror or a Thriller and maybe includes strong violence from the dieing part of the Tag Line. The main image used in this film poster is a girl's or women's face being pushed down on the floor by someone with a really dirty hand and finger nails. By not showing the viewer who the person is pushing the women down creates suspense and excitement which would persuade them to go and see the film. As the girl's face is expressionless it makes me viewer question whether she is actually scared or not. It confuses the viewer about what the film might actually be able so it would make them want to see the film more so they get a better understanding. The colour contrasts goes from light to dark from the top of the film poster to the bottom. This contrast between dark and light would represent the change that happens in the film, where it stars of with a normal family going on holiday to them being stuck in the desert and these people trying to kill them. This contrast would make me viewer wonder what the change in the film would be and build the excitement up for when they see the film. Overall I think this film poster of The Hills Have Eyes comes across as a horror or thriller film but at the same time it questions the viewer what exactly the film is about which is a good thing because it makes them want to go see the film. The main thing that creates this confusion is the contrast in colours and the main image. Therefore the poster clearly fits its purpose.

The Hills Have Eyes Film Trailer

This is a trailer of the filmed called The Hills Have Eyes. The trailer starts off with the producers logo, but have added a sepia effect. This effect represents the background behind this film which is explain in the next shot. The next shot looks like a nuclear bomb being dropped which is followed by a shot with the text "between 1949 and 1992 The United states Government Conduced 331 Nuclear Tests In The Desert Of New Mexico". A few shots of things being bombed is then shown and another blank shot with text on then says "Radioactive Fallout Contaminating and Mutated All Living Things Within 1,300 Square Metre". Having this as the opening for the trailer make sit seem more realistic for the viewer which makes the whole trailer more thriller and exciting. The trailer then shows a few other various shots of things being blown up and mutated babies. During the start of the trailer to this point a siren noise is being constantly played. Combining the noise of the siren with the images and text shown this creates tension for the viewer as it leaves them wonder what this has to do with the film and these images of these mutated babies would slightly frighten them. The whole mood of the trailer then dramatically changes as the next shot is of a van driving in the desert. The van is filled with a normal family going on their holiday where they seem to be lost. They stop off at a petrol station in the middle of the desert and ask for directions. then family then carry on driving through the dessert. Over these shots is a Mommas And Poppa's song being played which helps set the relaxing jolly holiday spirit. During these shots an establishing shot of the car driving through the desert is shown, this shot explains to the viewer how big this dessert is compared to the car. These shots set the mood and relax the viewer so when the mood dramatically changes it would create more tension and excitement for the viewer. The mood of the trailer is then changed again when the music stops and it seems like the tape of the trailer is stuck on the shot of the man from the petrol station. you then see a close up shot of some spikes appearing out of the ground and puncturing the van. The van then skids and crashes into a rock. you then hear a big smashing noise which alerts the viewer that something is wrong. Having no sound during this bit emphasizes that fact that these people are in danger. A close up shot is then included of the spikes being removed which proves that someone or something has intentionally damaged the family's van. The trailer then cuts to a mid shop of one of the members of family trying to get signal on their phone. During this shot you can hear a phone beeping which makes it clear to the viewer what the man is try to do and a repetitive guitar strum noise starts. This guitar strum alerts the viewer again and warns them that something bad is about to happen. This creates excitement and tension for the viewer as they wonder what is going to happen next. A point of view shot is then used as if someone or something is watching the man and his wive from a distance while they are trying to get signal. This creates suspense for the viewer as they wonder what this thing is watching them and whether they were the ones who punctured the vans tires. A series of short cuts are then used showing the family sitting around and talking. Using fasts cuts emphasizes to the viewer that these people are in danger and something is about to happen to them. An over the shoulder shot is then used from someone in a red hood watching the boy in the family walking through the dessert. This shot assures the viewer assumption of someone puncturing the tires. You then see a close up shot of the boys shocked panicked face as if he had just noticed something. This makes the viewer wonder whether the boy has caught thing person watching them or whether it is from a different part of the film. Then quickly cuts to a shot of another member of the family looking through their caravan at some flashing light in the hills. Again quickly cuts to a close up shot of the girl looking closer into the window then suddenly someone slams into the window. This creates tension and excitement for the viewer as they wasn't expect it. The trailer then cuts to a shot of boy saying to the girl 'There are like people or something living in those hills.". This then alerts the viewer that these people have now discovered these people and they wonder what will happen to them. It then cuts to a shot of another member of the family in the dark and he see something moves. This creates more excitement for the viewer as they want to know what these people or things are and what will happen in the film. You can then start to hear this heart beat noise, which makes the viewer feel more involved in the trailer as they start to feel panicky just like the characters in the films. While the heart beat noise is still [playing you can see a very dark shot of the man standing in a house while shouting hello. This shot has lack of lighting to make the viewer think that their is something hiding in the shadows. A fade transition is then used in the cut for the next shot. This fade creates tension for the viewer as they are waiting to see what happens next. You then hear the man carry on shouting something in a sound bridge while another shot is played of a strange looking man turning around quickly to face the camera. The deformed face and how quickly he turned round would have come to a shock for the viewer which would have caused more tension and excitement. The shot quickly then changes to another member of the family with a loud drumming noise used then you then hear a strange laughing and breath noise over a women crying. This sound bridges over to the next shot of another member of the family about to look through a gap in the door. Suddenly the door breaks through and someone grabs the man by the neck. A serious of shots through the film are then played for less than a second for each shot. as the seconds are not played long enough for a viewer to be able to see what they are this confuses the viewer and makes them wonder what is going on. A muffled gun shot noise is repeatedly played over these shots to create suspense for the viewer. Then muffled gun noise stopped playing and the shots slow down again. A few more shots from the film are then played with a girl voice screaming over the top. a close up shot if then used of another deformed face. During this shot a different gun noise is used. The whole point of this shot is to shock the viewer again with the deformed face and the quickness of the close up. This creates tension and excitement for the viewer. The same muffed gun shot noise is used again while a series of shots are played but so quickly that the viewer can not make out what they are. again, this confuses the viewer. A shot of someone trapped in a freezer is then played with a man screaming over the top of it. This shot is used to frighten the viewer as one of the things that people are most scared of is being trapped and not being able to get out of somewhere. Another close up shot of a deformed face is used again to shock the viewers. A series of shots from the film are then played again but in slower cuts so the viewer can get a better viewer of whats going on. The sound that is being played over these shots is like a Frisbee noise as is these things will keep coming back to them. The trailer then fades out to a shot of the film title with someone breathing over the top. This then fades out to a shot of some creepy hand touching the women's face while the same deep breathing turns into a weird creepy laugh. This is a long cut which is used to build up suspense as the viewer waits for something to happen. The trailer then zooms in on the women's eye and ends with the tay line to the film, "The Lucky Ones Die First". The costumes used throughout this trailer are modern day clothes for the normal family who are travailing to go on their holiday. The producers have decided to use modern clothes to make the film seem more realistic which makes the whole trailer more thrilling for the viewer. Through the trailer you never really get to see what the deformed people are wearing which makes the viewer feel them familiar to them which adds to the shock when they first see them. The only item of clothing that you see one of these people wearing, or the viewer can only guess is one of these deformed thing, is the red hooded top. The red hooded top symbolises dangers and blood. Overall I think this trailer represent the film The Hills Have Eyes as a very shocking horror full of action and goer. For any of those viewer who enjoy horror and thriller films this trailer would defiantly be an interest to them. Seeing all of the short takes combined with the sound effects suggests to them that this film is compact with action and thrills.

First Teaser Trailer Draft

First Draft from Aimee on Vimeo.

This was our groups attempt at a first draft teaser trailer. Our main aim in doing this activity was getting used to the equipment and understand our own roles in the group and their importance as we are all putting an equal amount off input in. This should help us as a group produce a finial teaser trailer to our best potential. As we haven't had chance to get used to the editing software yet, this draft teaser trailer includes no editing for effects so it is very basis and as we couldn't include any editing we could change around the scenes so the way how we filmed it is exactly how you can see it. We tried to create the effect that someone was watching and following this girl while she walked through the woods. As we were restricted to talking the camera equipment off our schools site we didn't have any real woodlands to film in, but a huddle of trees together at the top of the field. As the field we were filming in is right next to a main road, you could clearly hear in this draft teaser trailer and cars driving near us; this defiantly doesn't create an alone creepy atmosphere. Not being able to take the equipment off the school site also create another problem where we had to film the scenes in broad day light, so we couldn't create that erry creepy effect that almost Horror Thriller trailers have which is their to create excitement and tension for the viewer. For future reference we could film later on in the day instead or check to see what the weather forecast is going to be like for the rest of the week. I think filming this scene when its raining would work really well with the sort of atmosphere we would like to create. defiantly finding a woodland area or forest which was more secluded and with their being less lighting would create the perfect atmosphere to build the tension and excitement for the viewer. Even Though our first draft teaser trailer wasn't exactly what we were looking for; with the restricting we had to work we still agree that it turned out pretty good. the storyline we all have in mind so fair as a group has been vaguely shown in this first draft. for our first draft I think we defiantly have a stable idea and as a group we can defiantly expand it.

Audience Research (Year 10)

Just having audience research from one age group I don't think is enough as it isn't giving me a range of opinions. As a group we decided to widen our research and continue the same process we went through for our audience research with years eights with the year tens in our school. Doing so would help us realise the different opinions from different age ranges and help us decided what appeals to our target audience more. The only thing we made different this time was the film poster and magazine front covers that we used.

First Meeting - Genre

In our first meeting we discussed what genre of film we would like to base our trailer on. we all came to the decision to have a Thriller Horror trailer. We decided these genres because as a group we think this genre would give us the advantage to use more effects when we edited the trailer and included a wider variety of addition sound effects. To help the whole group come to this decision and to make sure it was the right we watched some trailers from other films, some of these trailers would come under the genre of Thriller or Horror but some of them don't as we just think they were helpful for their edition purposes. These are the following trailers, The Lovely Bones, One Hour Photo, Hill have Eyes, American Beauty, Last House On The Left, Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows, Inception and Amityville Horror. All of these trailers help everyone in our group to image their own trailer in their mind and what sort of effects would be added, the sort of shots that would engage the viewers, the sound sounds effects that would build up the tension and excitment and where about the shots would be taken. We all shared our own ideas for our first draft teaser trailer. We decided to base the start of the film around a young girl who is taking a stroll in some woods by herself. We would use a camera clicking sound effect and straight cuts to make it seem like someone is taking pictures of this girl and following her. Between each cut we would include a blank screen with text on. We think this was a good way to create tension and engage the viewer as it keeps them wondering what will happen next. Then after about three or four shots of this girl walking around the woods we would then speed up the shots and have a shot each second of this dark would and loads of things happening. for example we spoke about having shots where a bloody hand print would be on a tree, a bloody dirty hand sticking out the ground, the girl running really fast through the woods, close up about her shocked scared face, a shot of a dark shadow running fast through the woods, a foot print in the floor with blood stains around, and similar shots like this, but all of these shots would be taken at night in a dark wood. Also between each shot straight cut their would be a loud noise similar to a heart beat. Add this sound effect would defiantly build up the tension and excitement of the audience.

Does the main image or person on the front cover appeal to you? And why?
Her reply to this question was that the figures in The Lovely Bones film poster did appeal to her as these were the main image for the picture, and what the rest of the poster structured around. Out of all of the main images on all these film posters she thinks that The Lovely Bones main image with the tree with the falling leaves that turn into birds was the better one. The Tag Line that most interested Demmi was the one from The Lovely Bones film poster 'The story of a life and everything that came after...'. She thinks it keeps you in suspense and leaves you wondering what the film actually entails; having dots at the end of the sentence emphasized this.

What most stands out to you on the poster? And why?
The thing that most stood out to Demmi about this film poster was the fact that all the other posters used figures of people in them, or an image of a person, but even though this film is pacifically about a girl who has died, the only significant image they show if the tree. She really likes the fact that it is different and this would intemperate that the film wouldn't be like any other film.

What do you think this poster tells you about the film?
She think that this poster tell her that this film is going to be nothing like any other film she has seen, that the creates were very imaginative so it should be interesting and creative, the Tag Line influences her to think that the film is about someones life mainly and this small image of a girl in the middle of the poster tells her that it could include loneliness.

Is this poster interesting you in seeing the film? And why?
She thinks the poster for The Lovely Bones film defiantly interests her as she thinks the poster is unlike any other poster she has seen previous, and different to the other other poster as she quoted before.

Demmi thinks the most part of the trailer that stuck into her head was the part that would encourage her to go and see the trailer; where all the takes become shorter and the music becomes more up beat and thrilling.

she doesn't really prefer a specific genre of film but she does enjoy watching sad mysterious types of film. Which can be included in all different types of genres.

Second Interviewee
Names: Shannon
Ages: 13

Film Magazine Front Covers
Does the image or person on the front cover appeal to you? And why? She thinks that the main image defiantly plays a huge part in appealing to its audiences as it tells them what the film is about, or influences them to think of the film in different ways. She also thinks that having an image of a famous actor on the front cover does make a different especially if it is a well known one, as it would encourage fans of that actor to go and see the film.

Does the colour scheme on the front cover appeal to you? And why? Defiantly the colour scheme makes different to Shannon. she believes that a good contrast with the background and the colour scheme within the text with the main image makes a big different. For example the contrast with the main image of the Joker on the front cover with the dark back ground makes the main image stand out more and makes it more appealing.

Is the font and size of the text appealing and easy to read? And why?
Yes, she thinks that the font is easy to read and the contrasts with the dark background defiantly helps. However she thinks that the lack of text on the cover makes it more interesting as you would want to read inside the magazine because you are not told on the font. Also the lack of texts draws your eyes towards the main image more.

Which magazine cover stand out more? And why?
In Shannon's opinion she thinks that the magazine front cover for Batman The Dark Knight is more appealing at the close up of the Joker makes it seem more intense and exciting. Comparing the Dark Knights magazine front cover with the Harry Potter and X-Men front cover, she agrees that even though the Dark Knight front cover has less text and is a lot more simpler than the other two, it makes a good contrasts so it stands out more.

What most stands out to you on the front cover? And why? Shannon think out of all the magazine front covers in front of her the main thing that stands out to her is the image. It's the one thing that she thinks tells her most about the film.

Film Posters
Does the main image or person on the front cover appeal to you? And why?
As Shannon said before about the main image being important on the film magazine front cover she believes that it is important for the film posters also, but mostly more important as it's the only thing really that tells the viewer what the film is about apart from the Tag Line. The images on these front covers defiantly appeal to her, especially The Lovely Bones one with the girl and the figure of a man on the left side. It appeals to her the most because the contrasts of the girl wearing all colourful clothes and there just being a dark figure of a man defiantly says something interesting about the film.

What’s the last Tag Line you can remember from a film or a film poster? And why?
Shannon doesn't really remember any Tag Lines from any other film posters, however she thinks that the Tag Line on The Lovely Bones film poster defiantly appeals to her as it tells er a lot about the film. Her opinion on this was the same as Demmi's opinion who was the previous interviewee.

What most stands out to you on the poster? And why?
The thing that most stood out to Shannon on The Lovely Bones film poster is the contrasts between the two people in the main image. The people in the main image in The Hottie And The Nottie film poster also stands out more. She thinks the reason why the people stand out more in The Hottie And The Nottie poster stand out more because there is a white glow edited around them, the glow contrasts with the darker figures which makes them stand out more.
