Grease

Grease Film Poster

This Grease film poster meets the conventions of a film poster as the big star actors are titled at the top of the poster, the billing block is positioned at the bottom of the poster along with the tag that that is situated just beneath the main image.
This main image has be edited so it has a cartoon effect which represents the comedy side of the film and the fun upbeat side of the film being a musical. the image is a mid shot of a man and woman dancing, this shows the romance which the film entails. The image mainly includes the colours black, red and blue; the red and blue colours represents the division between the two genders, where as the black represents the ciaos which the two characters are involved in.
This poster appeals to their audience as the image and the colour scheme used clearly shows the romance in the film, so this would Grease poster would defiantly appeal to their audience.
This Grease film poster relates to the Grease film magazine front cover as they have both used the same image but on the ,magazine cover they haven't used a cartoon effect on it.
Overall i think this film poster really does represent the film well as it meets all of the usual conventions of a film poster and provides for its targets audience. The Grease film poster has made me realise how important the colour scheme is on a film poster, and how it can make audience see different sides of the film through the different presentational devices.

Grease Magazine Cover

This Grease film magazine cover also meets all of the conventions for a magazine front cover, as it had a right hand third, masthead, main image, and a tag.
As the image used in this cover is the same image that has been used in the Grease film poster it has a similar purpose and effect on its audience. As the image hasn't got a cartoon this image shows the film in a more serious view and that the relationship between Danny and Sandy is something real. The colour scheme is more red and black in this cover, which also emphasizes the seriousness of the relationship, not the comedy side of the film or the upbeat musical side.
The poster would meet its target audience of romantic films as this is what this poster mostly emphasizes about the grease film.
Overall i think this poster looks very presentable but i think what lent sit down is that it doesn't show all sides to the film; I think that is what a reader would mainly be looking for. This has taught me in my planning of designing a film poster is that for the right opinion to come across to your readers you need to show every side of the film in the poster.

Grease Film Trailer

This is the trailer for the film Grease. The first thing that you see on this trailer is a shot of the producers and their logo. This would encourage any viewer who has seen a film previously that they enjoyed by this producer. The next then goes straight to a mid close up shot that zooms into John Travoler's face. This is introducing the actor and any fans of John Travolor's previous work would be enticed to go and see this. Then cuts to a mid shot of Oliver Newton John who is also a well known actress and this shot would encourage any fans of this actress to go and see the film. The next shot is then a black screen with the films title Grease. Using a straight cut the trailer then goes to another mid shot but off a load of people dancing and moving away from each other in a big line. This shot shows the viewer the musical and fun side of the film. The next shot is of three men messing around and having a joke, this shows the laid back side of the film which would encourage viewers to go and see it especially females viewers. A close shot of John Travoltor's face then appears of him twiddling with his hair. The twiddling of his hair is an iconic symbolise for this film and well known. The editor has then include a wide shot of John Travolor and eight men dancing and singing on a car. This again shows the musical and fun side of the film which encourages any fans of musical films to go and see this film. The next few shots are of this same location but from different angles, which has the same effect on a viewer. The trailer then cuts to a various of other shots from a different location. This location is full of loads of teenagers dressed up at a ball and dancing. This again is showing the musical and fun side of the film which encourages mainly female viewers and people who enjoy musicals. The editor has also include a a romantic comedy scene in the trailer of John and Oliver in a car and Kate slams the door on John. This would encourage viewers who enjoy watching comedy films to go and see Grease. The trailer then cuts to a few dance scene with John and some other lads dancing and singing and another mid shot of Oliver and some other girls dancing around. These shots have the same effect as the previous musical shots the editor has used. In these shots you can see where some women kick another one and Oliver nearly falls into a bin, this shot represents the comedy side of the film again and would encourage anyone who enjoys comedy films to go and see Grease. The next shot includes a conversation between a man and a women where the women is trying to cover up her hickey while the man is joking around about it. This shot again resembles the comedy side of the film. The rest of the trailer then introduces the characters and the film title again with a shot of them dancing
Up until the editor has included the musical shots he has used a narrator talking over the shots to explain what the films about and to introduce the actors and actresses. This introductions helps the viewer understand what the film actually about and as this film is quite old they didn't have the technology to add sound effects. While all of the musical shots are being played in the trailer music is being played over the top to go with the actors and actresses dancing. The narrator starts talking over the trailer introducing the actor and actress' again and the film title. He also explains what the film in titled which encourages anyone who enjoys musical and dance films.
The costumes that the characters are wearing in this trailer are clothes from what people would have worn in the 60's. They did this as the music what the musical was based around was music which would have been out during the 60's. This is why the women wore long dresses with cardigans and the men wore leather jackets and trousers. It sets the scene perfectly for the sort of music the musical produced.
I think the trailer has represented the film as a light hearted musical comedy. As this was one of the first huge musical to be release the director and edited didn't need to do anything special to the trailer as they weren't in competition with any other films at the time. They knew straight away that any young female or a fan of musicals would go and see this film no matter what the trailer was like.

Pirates Of The Caribbean

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At Worlds End Magazine Front Cover

This Pirates Of The Caribbean magazine front cover meets all of the conventions of a magazine front cover; it includes a masthead, main image with a left hand and right hand side third which is structured around the main image, a colour scheme, and the main text.
The image that they have used is of Johnny Depp who is the main character in the film. you can clearly see the costume that he is wearing is representing him as a pirate and the expression on his face is very serious showing that this film is serious and could include a lot of tension. also Johnny Depp is holding a prop which is a large sword; this represents the action and violents which the film entails.
A red, white and black colour scheme is used throughout the cover page. The red represents the romance and danger in the film, the black represents something dark and death threatening which is entailed in the film, and the white represents the purity of will and Elizebeth getting married. these colours also match with Johnny Depp's costume in the main image, so the cover looks appealing and presentable.
This magazine front cover would appeal to Pirates Of The Caribbean lovers as Johnny Depp is on the front cover who is a huge icon. the magazine cover as a whole is extremely appealing, so this would attract anyone including their target audience.

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At Worlds End Film Poster

This is a film poster for the film Pirates Of The Caribbean At Worlds End. This poster meets the conventions of a film poster as it has a main image, a billing blog, the date, star actors names, and the tag line just below the main image.
The use of colour on the poster is mainly white, black and greys. These colours represent the film being dark and gloomy, which part of the film is, but not all of it. the film also includes comedy and romance, which this colour scheme doesn't show.
The main image emphasises the dark and gloomy side of the film. They have done this by having an image with the tree main characters whop are wearing pirate costumes. The three pirates and walking through fog and one with a lantern and the other with a swore. The prop of the sword is used again to show the action and violence which the film entails, and the prop of the lantern shows the a division between the male and females that the females are weaker than the other two males. the fog is a key feature that emphasizes the gloomy and mysterious side of the film.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean film poster appealing to those who enjoy mysterious action films, and i think this film poster really hits that target audience. The only problem is that this film isn't just about violents and mysterious creatures, it also includes comedy and romance; and as this film poster is supposed to be appealing to the Pirates Of The Caribbeans target audience in my opinion i think they should include all aspects of the film.
This film poster has helped me with my planning of a film poster as it has made me realise that i should consider all aspects of a film before i design a poster or a magazine front cover for that matter.

Pirates Of The Caribbean - At Worlds End Trailer

The Pirates Of The Caribbean - At Worlds end trailer starts off with an establishing shot of an orange sunset. this establishing shot represents the open waters and the worlds end which is where a lot of the film is taken place. It then fades into another establishing shot of the Black Pearl which is a boat that is used for most of the scene sin the film. Then Fades to a logo of Walt Disney, which is the producers of the film. in this fade cut the editor has used a thunder and lightening effect which shows the viewer the dark side of the film as the lightening represents this. the same effect is used again but this time the next screen shows the logo for Jerry Bruckheimer Films. as These two producers are well known this would encourage a viewer who has seen one of their films which they enjoyed to go and see this film also. Using a straight cut the trailer then cuts to a close up where someone is holding a compose turning around. Any fan of the previous Pirates Of The Caribbeans will remember this compose and its purpose. Therefore having a clipping of this compose would remind fans of the previous films and it also represents the journey they go on throughout the film. Using another fade shot the trailer goes into another clipping from the film. A mid shot of a woman looking up at something. another fade is used again to another scene with a mid shot of a different woman speaking to these two men. this woman's voice is played from the first clipping of the woman looking up at something. Throughout the next ten shots this woman's voice is used as a narrative and is explaining what these people are planning to do in the film. This shows the confusion and chaos that the film entails as it would confuse the audience because they wouldn't be completely sure who is talking.
In these ten clipping we see a lot of then involving the Black Pearl again, people swimming under water, one of the bad pirates looking at a map, the women telling the mother pirates what they should do,and Captain Jack at worlds end. There is a least a second between each of these shots and all used straight cuts. This gives the viewer an insight to what the film actually entails and the straight cuts are used to show the reality of the film. then comes to a slower take where Jack is asking all of the pirates whether anyone came to save him because they missed him, then there is no sound apart from a money making a noise. This takes show the humours parts involved in the film and that it isn't just a serious film about pirates saving another pirate; the long take also emphasises the humour in the scene. This would defiantly widen their audience and encourage viewers to go see the film if they enjoyed comedy films.
The next shot is of Jack asking these people if any of them missed his, and no one replys apart from a monkey. The whole point in this shot is to show the comedy side of the film and this would encourage any comedy film lovers to go and see the film. Then the release date of the film appears on the screen, this is for any viewer who is already interested in seeing this film and answers their questions to when it is being released.
The next 27 shots are shots through the film of people being bombed, in sword fights, on boats, and on islands. Over these shots is a mans voice from the film explaining what these people plan to go in the film which gives a viewer an idea of what might happen. As the trailer doesn't specifically tell the viewer what is going to happen this encourages them to go and see the film.
Then the producers name come son the screen, so any previous viewers who have seen a Walt Disney filmed and was really impressed by it would be interested in seeing this film.
The next 11 shots in the trailer are various shots thought the film which is giving the viewer a taster of what happens in the film but in no piratically order so it still leaves the viewer questioning what happens. The next 18 shots are also including similar shots from the whole film but this time the cuts are a lot faster and go in rhythm with the music. This creates tension and excitement for a viewer. The final shot of this sequence is a shot of two men fighting onto of a boat. The sound that the swords make each time they hit each other also matches the rhythm the rhythm of the music. The creates more suspense and excitement for a viewer.
The trailer then introduces various actors and actress' in the film by showing their name then two shots from the film of that person. This encourages any fans of these actors and actress' to go and see this film as they have previously liked films they've been in. The trailer then shots the film title and the release date again. Showing the release date twice throughout the trailer make sit harder for someone to forget what date the film comes out. The whole point in a trailer is to get the film stuck in someone head and them interested to go and see the film.
The costumes that the actors and actress are wearing in the trailer are very old and scruffy looking. This matches the pirate theme and resembles the action in the film. For example if all the characters were all nicely dressed the viewers stereotype of a pirate would seem completely wrong and they wouldn't be encouraged to go and see this film.
I think this trailer resembles Pirates Of The Caribbean At Worlds End as an action comedy film. Including all the short cuts shows the amount of action that the film entails and the random funny shots that the editor has included lighten up the whole action side. Therefore it would encourage a wider audience.

Star Wars Promotion Packaging

Star Wars Magazine Front Cover

This is a Star Wars magazine front cover. This front cover meets the conventions of a magazine front cover as it includes a masthead, right hand side third which is structured around the main image, and price.
The main imaged used on this front cover is of one of the main character in the star wars series and is know to be an icon for some. Using a well known acting on the front of a magazine is a good way to interest new readers. The man is in a Jedi's costume with a light saber proper which represents the fighting action in the film. In the back ground you can see an army of stormtroopers which represents the sense of control and wars which the film entails.
as Star Wars is a huge and well known film, this allows them to create a simple but effective film magazine cover as it is known world world. having a well known actor from the film as the main image would draw every Star Wars fan to the magazine. So any fan of Star Wars would be immediately engaged in the magazine just by the icon.
This poster has helped me with planning my own magazine cover for a film because I have realised that i wont be able to create something as simple as this, as the trailer i am making no one will know anything about it before hand.

Star Wars Film Poster

This is a film poster of Star Wars. This poster meets some the convention of a film poster as it has the title, main image, billing board, and date.
The main image is of nine different images from the film all cropped and layered over each other. Having the images layered out like this on the film poster makes it seem like their is a lot of chaos and action in the film. One of the images is of two men in dark costumes fighting with light sabers, with represents the fight scenes in the film, so this would defiantly attract any of those fans who love action films. Also, you can see that these images have been slightly edited where they have added a cartoon and sketch affect. The makes of Star wars have decided to do this so the film poster doesn't just attract to the older ages in their audience, it would also attract the young ages, and as Star Wars is a world wide known film this is imported that it meets all their audiences standards.
In the poster the colour scheme that they have chosen is black, red and orange. for most of the poster the colour black has been used because any fans of Star Wars would know that their is a dark side which plays a huge part in this episode. The red has been used to represent the romance between two of the characters in the film and the death in some other parts of the film. The other colour they mainly used in the film poster is orange. This colour represents the neutral feeling that one of the characters goes through between the dark side and the good side. so the colour shows the confused feeling that the character goes through during the film.
This Star wars poster would appeal to its audience as it shows the action and the difference between the two sides. As Star Wars is a huge hit globally everyone would already be appealed to the poster as it is clear which film it is with the Darth Fader image in the background.
This Star Wars film poster relates to the Star Wars magazine front cover and the Star Wars Return of the Jedi trailer because the use of colour in all three are very similar, and all of the images and camera shots used mainly represent the action and fighting scenes in the film.
Overall i think this film poster represents the Star Wars film in a way that entices all action film lovers to come and see the film; even though this is what the film is mainly about they should be trying to widen their audience and advertise the romance films and the confused feelings that some of the characters go through. Therefore i think the film poster does an extremely good job at grabbing their target audience attention, but not trying to widen their audience. Analysing this poster has made me realise that in my planning i should considering including all aspects of a film in the poster not just one. This would engage more people in the audience to be interested in the film.

Star Wars - The Revenge Of The Sith Trailer

The trailer of Star Wars - The Revenge Of The Sith starts off with two establishing shot of two ships flying towards a planet and then another one following after showing a large building city within that planet. this would immediately attract the attention of any Star Wars fans as they would know just form these two shots that this trailer is defiantly for Star Wars. The next shot is a close up of one of the Dark Sides leaders persuading one of the Jedi's from the good side Anakin Skywalkerto learn evil powers that are so powerful that their known to be unnatural. It then shows a close up shot of the good Jedi reaction and that his persuasion was clearly working on him. This would interest a viewer to watch the film as they would want to know what would happen next in the film and whether he would gain this evil power or not. It then does another establishing shot showing where the next characters in the next scene will be. The next shot is a wide shot shows Anakin Skywalker walking with another Jedi but this time you see the good side of Anakin where him and this other Jedi is planning how to stop all this war happening. The trailer then shows some quick establishing shots of the wars happening throughout the film,. These quick establishing shots would defiantly interest a viewer to watch the film especially if they were a huge star Wars fan to begin with and a lover of action films as they would see that this film entails a lot of action. In the trailer it then cross cuts from more war and fighting scenes from showing mid shots of characters expressing their feeling about Anaika and that they don't trust him. This is showing another side of the film that isn't just action or fighting, its showing how some of the characters feel and that the film entails a twist and some confusion; so this twist could entice the viewers to go see the film or encourages viewers who wouldn't usually go and see the film to go and see it. Within the cross cutting shots of the war scenes happening, you see another mid shot where the evil man from the dark side is continuing to persuade Anakin to go against the Jedi's on the other side. the twist continues when we see a wide shot of all the Jedi's together and telling Anakin that they don't trust him. these two shots would encourages viewers to continue to watch the trailer and go and see the film as they would want to know why the Jedi's are unsure about trusting him and what this evil man on the dark side is planning. In the next cross cut we see two mid shots which shows both of the sides clashing, where the Jedi's on the good side have threatened the evil man on the dark side and you can see the beginning of a fight happening. This scene in the trailer is showing the viewers more actions which is involved in the film; this would have the same effect on the viewers as the previous action clippings. Ten various action clips from the film are then used in ten seconds of the trailer. Having a second between each clip creates tension and excitement for the viewer. This would encourage viewers ho love film that build up tension or excitement to go and see the film as the trailer puts the film in that perspective. We then see a clipping of the same man from the dark side telling someone that all the Jedi's are enemies, but his voice is then played over a few of the next following clips. The editor has done this so the viewers are left wondering who this man is saying this to and why he is saying.
The first sound you hear on the trailer is of one of the spaceships used in the film. this space ship sound is very recognisable as being on Star Wars; so as a viewer hearing this noise they would automatically know it was a trailer for Star wars. Then the sound goes some familiar music that is used ion each Star Wars film when they change from scene to scene. We then see a various of scenes that used dialect which i have already spoke about, but in the background of these scenes you can hear another familiar Star wars tune that is used in the other Star Wars episodes. This is played in the background so it reminds the viewers or the regular Star Wars audience of the previous episodes and how much they enjoyed them, so they would think they are going to enjoy this episode also. Throughout the trailer you see various action and war scenes from the film, in these scenes you can hear guns being shot, explosions, light saber clashing, drum noise, Chew backer noises, Darth Vader noises. All of these sound effects are known all around the world to be from the well known film Star Wars; so therefore the editor has used these sound effects to remind Star Wars fans how great the previous films were and that this episode is going to be just great. in the part of the trailer were the editor has used cross cutting from ten different scenes in the film in ten seconds, the editor has also used a drumming sound effect each time a straight cut is used; this creates a heart beat effect and it creates tension and excitement for the viewer.
The Costume that all the characters are wearing is what the characters have worn in the previous films, this would remind Star Wars fans of the previous episodes and what the plot was about. This would encourage their audience and the regular Star Wars fan to go and watch the film because they would realise how much they enjoyed the previous Star Wars film.
The Star Wars trailer relates to the poster and to the magazine front cover as they have used similar colours. the colours that have been used throughout the trailer are very dark and suttle colours. I think this has the same effect as the colour scheme did on the poster and on the magazine front cover; that it represents the action and war scenes which the film entails.
I think the trailer has represented the film being a huge action and war film as it builds up tension and excitement from a viewers point of view, and most of the trailer is war scenes from the film. For most Star Wars fans this would be exactly what they would be looking for in the next Star Wars film, a film full of action and excitement; but if the editor was interested in widening their audience i think he should of included other romance scenes from the film. From analysing this trailer i have learnt that including a lot of sound effects like drumming noises and explosion can have a huge effect on the reviews and engage them in the film more.
